i got inspired by your latest blog entry, kink! hahaha :) reading about your cooking experiences sure reminds me of my own.
my first time cooking was in secondary school for home econs. and there was this project where every group had the choice to choose a theme they want and delegate among themselves who cooks what. so i was suppose to do this nonya kueh (which i can't recall what it was anymore). went to the supermarket with my groupmates the day before the actual day to buy the ingredients and even went to suen's place so her maid can help us out. and that was where we realised (from her maid) that half the stuff we bought were wrong! goodness, i bought coconut milk instead of coconut shavings for my kueh! anyway, it was disastrous on the actual day despite practising at suen's place.i spilled three-quarters of my bag of flour on the floor (which i hurriedly shoved under the table)! picked up whatever spillage i could from the table and did my kueh.. haha the teacher had to eat it!
and then during culinary science in poly, it was individual execution for some graded stuff.. i can't remember what. individual is bad.. at least if in a group, i can leech on others! haha. so i got grilled chicken roll. everything went well except i forgot carrots needed to be cooked. so happily i cut my carrots into bayonets as required and rolled them into my piece of grilled chicken. TADA, DONE! then, ms daga came to taste and grade. she cut the chicken roll i confidently made, and out shot the carrots! like literally.. my carrots shot out far. sooooooper embarrassing! everyone was laughing.
my sister just made me butter sugar toast for breakfast. which reminds me of that once i tried making it.. how hard can butter sugar toast be right? just spread butter on toast and sprinkle sugar over it. so, satisfied with what i made again.. i took my first bite. and i was horrified! it was salty. i made butter salt toast instead. and i was so generous with my 'sugar' serving.. i even made two toasts for myself. needless to say, they ended up in the bin.
and then there was the period i loved scrambled eggs.. so i decided to make my own. cracked the eggs, messed it up in the pan and added salt and pepper. easy! but half my eggs were uncooked, while the other half was burnt. up till now, i still don't know why!
so kink, i hope you feel encouraged that you're not alone! haha, but i can teach you maggi mee though. i'm very good at that! :) when i have a family next time and it gets too expensive to eat raw salmon with rice everyday.. we'll just have steamboat everyday, every meal :)
 bringing me to his kingdom.
